Zhang Lab
Principal Investigator

Sufeng Zhang, PhD
Dr. Sufeng Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University. Her research integrates materials science, drug delivery, and immunoengineering to develop therapies for inflammatory diseases and tissue regeneration, with a particular focus on gut inflammation and its effects on distant organs such as the joints, skin, and nervous system. Her lab’s work reflects a translational approach rooted in engineering and disease biology. Dr. Zhang earned her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta and completed postdoctoral training at MIT with Dr. Robert Langer. Before joining Stony Brook, she was an Instructor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she received the Chair’s Research Award. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, early-stage mentorship, and the development of engineering-driven solutions to complex health challenges.

Ingrid Oprea, MS
Ingrid holds a B.S. in Biology and Psychology and a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). At RPI, she conducted research in the Gilbert Lab on biomaterial-based spinal cord regeneration. Following her graduate studies, Ingrid joined Regeneron Pharmaceuticals as a Biotech Production Specialist, where she supported mid-scale biologics manufacturing for clinical trial pipelines. Currently at Stony Brook, her research interests lie in the intersection of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Outside the lab, Ingrid enjoys cooking, gardening, traveling and exploring local beaches, and spending quality time with her family.
Undergraduate Students

Nicole Chan
Nicole is a senior double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics & Statistics. After the completion of her bachelor’s degree, she will be pursuing her MS in Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University. During breaks, she works as a medical receptionist at a radiology center. Her research interests include microbiology, tissue engineering, and medical imaging. In the future, she plans to work in industry. In her free time, she likes to read, listen to music, and spend time with friends.

Christopher Zarbhanelian
Christopher, a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on Molecular/Cellular Bioengineering, has an interest in studying regenerative medicine and translational research that bridges engineering and patient care. Currently, he is expanding his skills in laboratory work and data analysis including novel materials for engineering and organ regeneration applications. His interests also coincide with a long-term goal of making a positive impact in unmet needs in patient treatment. In the near future, he will be going to medical school to further advance this strong passion with the aim of integrating research insights into patient care to improve health outcomes.

Ella Reyes
Ella is a sophomore majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She plans to go to graduate school following the completion of her bachelors degree, and then work in industry before returning to the world of academia for her PhD. Her research interests include nanoparticles, internal prosthetics, and diabetic management equipment. Ella is in the WISE honors college, and will be an honors fellow in the fall. She is also a member of the swim club, and is in the process of starting a new campus discussion club. In her free time, she is likely found reading at the beach or swimming. She enjoys learning and spending time with friends and family.
We gratefully acknowledge Ella, Nicole, and Ingrid for their contributions to the development of this website.
